Episcopal Impact Fund celebrates a powerful partnership bringing compassion, community, and clean clothes to neighbors in need

“Episcopal Impact Fund has been an extraordinary partner in bringing Laundry Love to life at Grace. Their support goes far beyond funding—it’s a shared commitment to honoring the dignity of every person who walks through our doors. Together, we’re not just meeting a basic need; we’re building community, fostering connection, and reminding our neighbors that they are seen, valued, and loved.”— The Very Rev. Deborah White, PhD, Rector, Grace Episcopal Church, Martinez
At Episcopal Impact Fund, we take pride in supporting programs that address urgent needs while honoring the dignity of every individual—and Laundry Love at Grace Episcopal Church in Martinez exemplifies this mission.
What may seem like a simple act of washing clothes transforms into something much more profound through this ministry. Each week, volunteers come together with neighbors experiencing homelessness or financial hardship, providing not just quarters and detergent, but a welcoming space rooted in respect and community.
The impact of this initiative is truly remarkable. What began as a small effort serving just a few individuals has expanded to nearly 100 loads of laundry each week—demonstrating both the significant need and the program’s success.
In suburban areas, the high cost of living can turn basic necessities, like laundry services, into a considerable financial burden. Many of our neighbors live at or below the poverty level, constantly juggling the costs of housing, food, and other essential expenses. For those struggling to stay housed and fed, affording regular laundry services often becomes a low priority.
The consequences of unclean clothes can be severe. Individuals may face stigma and discrimination, which can negatively impact their self-esteem and mental health. Children may miss school due to bullying or embarrassment, while adults might miss job opportunities, hindering their ability to break the cycle of poverty. Furthermore, a lack of clean clothing can impede essential daily activities and contribute to health issues, further entrenching individuals in their struggles.
As a grantmaker and partner, we are honored to invest in programs at DioCal churches that serve people experiencing poverty in their communities, like Grace Episcopal Church in Martinez. We encourage members of the Diocese of California to explore their neighborhoods for needs they can address.
